Skin aging is a natural process caused by both external (temperature, microbial agents and sun exposure) and internal factors (inflammation and metabolic alterations) as well as by toxic substances. People respond differently to preventive therapies and treatments with very different results, because their skin metabolism and aging process are affected by the way certain genes function. Scientific studies reported case of centenarians whose skin looks younger than their actual age, suggesting a strong link between the individual genomic profile and the aging process. It is widely known that aging is mostly affected by genetic factors that are responsible for over 60% of the process.

  • What does the test say?
    Beauty by netgenomics reveals any abnormal response of the skin to different factors including oxidative stress, exposure to ultraviolet radiation, inflammation and metabolic alterations resulting in excessive production of free radicals. The test highlights the genetic predisposition to develop skin imperfections such as wrinkling, cellulite, stretch marks, varicose veins, and loss of elasticity and skin hydration. It also identifies any possible alteration in the fat and carbohydrate metabolism that may accelerate the process of skin aging. In addition, the test analyzes genetic variants underlying the risk of developing melanoma, and the degree of skin sensitivity to ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB).
  • What does the test analyze?
    Beauty by netgenomics analyzes several different polymorphisms or genetics variation (SNPs) that can affect the different properties of the skin and the capacity to metabolize carbohydrates and fats. The test is performed using Next Generation Sequencing techniques (NGS) with Illumina sequencers guaranteeing high levels of accuracy and sensitivity.
  • How is the test done?
    Beauty by netgenomics uses DNA collected with an oral swab that captures the cells of the mucosal surfaces inside the mouth. The DNA is then extracted and sequenced with ILLUMINA-based Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques that reveal the genetic code of the investigated genes. The test examines 52 genetic variants (SNPs) found in the genes associated with different characteristics of the skin and the whole sequence of 2 genes related to melanoma predisposition. The following variants are analysed and described in different sections of the report:

    - 11 variants included in the section "Intolerance and sensitivity" explaining the response to certain foods such as gluten and lactose that can induce permanent levels of skin inflammation and hypersensitivity, as well as fructose and nickel;
    - 15 variants included in the section “Skin Care” explaining the predisposition to oxidative stress and describing the skin antioxidant and detoxifying activity;
    - 11 variants included in the section “Skin care and sun exposure” explaining the skin tanning capacity, the sensitivity to UVA and UVB rays, the predisposition to develop sun spots and the response to photoaging;
    - 6 variants included in the section "Wrinkles and skin elasticity" explaining the predisposition to skin wrinkling, the degree of skin elasticity and hydration, the risk to develop skin imperfections such as varicose veins, cellulite and stretch marks;
    - 9 variants included in the section "Vitamin intake”" section explaining the levels of those vitamins that play an important role in skin beauty and wellbeing.

    In addition, Beauty by netgenomics analyzes the sequence of 2 genes related to the predisposition to certain skin tumors such as melanomas.

    The DNA samples are sent to, processed and analysed in our certified laboratory in Italy.
